The co-chairwoman of the far-right formation Alternative for Germany (AfD), Alice Weidel, proclaimed this Sunday that her party is "the party of the people" and demanded that the "weak" chancellor Friedrich Merz resign after the latest results at the polls.
"AfD is clearly the new party of the people in Germany. We have surpassed the CDU and people want a political change," Weidel stated.
The leader emphasized that, in her opinion, "the CDU with Friedrich Merz, with a weak chancellor, cannot continue," words spoken after the exit polls from the elections held this Sunday in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin were revealed.
In the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, AfD is once again positioned as the most voted force with 37% support, while the CDU remains at 5.5% and becomes the fifth political option, according to the survey released by the German public broadcaster ARD.
In Berlin, the electoral landscape is very different: the city-state, capital and one of the most populated in the country, places The Left at the forefront with 25.3%, followed by the CDU with 19.1%, AfD with 16.2%, the Greens with 14.5%, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) with 12.1%, and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) with 5%.
