At least two people have lost their lives and two others have been injured after a U.S. attack on the island of Larek, an Iranian territory located in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, in the Persian Gulf.
The Iranian news agency Tasnim, linked to the Revolutionary Guard, reported on Saturday night that a drone had attacked the area "an hour ago" and communicated the casualty count citing "unofficial sources." According to this media outlet, the bombing occurred in a sensitive area due to its relevance for maritime security.
For its part, the Qatari channel Al Jazeera, citing a U.S. official on condition of anonymity, indicated that U.S. forces had attacked two rocket launchers belonging to the Revolutionary Guard located on the island of Larek. According to this source, the devices were being prepared for the launch of naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
The consulted official explained that the objective was to prevent the placement of explosives on one of the main energy routes of the planet. "Our forces have completed the demining of the international shipping routes of the Strait of Hormuz," he stated, before warning that they continue to monitor the area and remain "ready" to "protect the free commercial transit through the Strait of Hormuz."
In recent days, the Strait of Hormuz has solidified as a high-tension enclave after Iran decided to block the passage of oil from the Persian Gulf in retaliation for the attacks by Israel and the United States, which has raised the risk of further regional escalation.
