The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, has formally requested the Indian Executive to expedite the extradition procedures of the former head of government Sheij Hasina, after she made public her plan to return to the country at the end of this year.
"Bangladesh expects India to accelerate the extradition process of Sheij Hasina," Rahman stated in a statement reported by the newspaper 'Prothom Alo'.
The request was made following a meeting with the High Commissioner of India, Dinesh Trivedi, in which both officials discussed the need to consolidate a favorable climate to continue strengthening the bilateral ties between the two nations.
At the beginning of August, Hasina had already indicated that she plans to return in December to Bangladesh from India, the country where she remains in exile after being sentenced to the death penalty for crimes against humanity linked to the harsh repression of the protests in July and August 2024, which left 1,400 dead and led to the end of her fifteen years in power.
At that time, Dhaka, in reference to its neighboring country, lamented not having received a response to the "repeated requests" for Hasina's extradition, while also reminding New Delhi that "allowing her to interact openly with the media under any pretext is deeply hurtful to the sentiment" of its people, as well as being "harmful to the development of harmonious bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India."
