The Executive of the Dominican Republic has made public this Thursday that it has ordered the departure from the country of nine diplomats from Cuba along with their families, who have been granted a maximum period of seven days to leave Dominican territory.
"The Dominican government formally requested the withdrawal of nine members of the Cuban diplomatic mission and their families from the Cuban Embassy in the country, granting a period of seven days for such purposes," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed in a statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has explained that this decision is adopted within the framework of its "powers" protected by International Law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, although it has not provided details on the specific reasons that have led to this determination.
"The Dominican government (...) will continue to handle this matter with the due discretion and through the established diplomatic channels, in the interest of preserving relations between both countries," it has added.
The diplomatic ties between Cuba and the Dominican Republic were reestablished in 1996, after decades of rupture since 1959, when they were interrupted under the regime of Fidel Castro in Havana and the military dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in Santo Domingo.
