The German Minister of Justice, Stefanie Hubig, has proposed to reform the Fundamental Law, the country's Constitution, in response to the recent Islamist attack carried out in Berlin against the Pride Day march.

"I am in favor of amending Article 3(3) of the Fundamental Law to include the prohibition of discrimination based on sexual identity," said the social democratic politician in an interview published this Saturday by the newspaper 'Rheinische Post'.

Currently, the Magna Carta already prohibits discrimination or preferential treatment based on reasons such as ancestry, language, homeland or origin, as well as faith, religion, or political opinions. "It is logical to also prohibit unequal treatment based on sexual identity," Hubig has stated.

However, the Justice Minister has admitted that a deeper debate is still necessary within the coalition made up of conservatives and social democrats. Hubig has pointed out that, although there are still reservations in the conservative alliance CDU/CSU that supports Chancellor Friedrich Merz, positive advances are also being perceived.

After the attack, the head of government directly addressed the LGBTIQ+ community and reiterated that the State will strive to ensure their safety. "An amendment to the Fundamental Law would give substance to this announcement," Hubig has emphasized.

During the Pride Day celebrations on July 25 in Tiergarten Park in Berlin, a 21-year-old young man rammed a van into several pedestrians and subsequently attacked other people with a machete.

A woman lost her life and at least 31 people were injured, seven of them seriously. The Islamist perpetrator was ultimately cornered and shot by the police the day after the attack.
