The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has lashed out this Tuesday against the French President, Emmanuel Macron, after he described the situation in the Gaza Strip as a "shameful spectacle," statements that the Likud leader has labeled as "grotesque absurdity."
"The grotesque absurdity of Emmanuel Macron's statement is astonishing," Netanyahu has pointed out, according to a statement released by the office of the Israeli Prime Minister.
The head of the Government of Israel has censured Macron's words before the United Nations General Assembly, which is taking place this week in New York, mentioning the murder of a French citizen at the hands of "a Hamas terrorist" while driving through the West Bank.
"With his last breath, he told his son to flee," he has assured about an incident that, according to him, occurred days before the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement.
"Hamas terrorists carry out attacks against Jews almost daily. They have murdered countless Israeli civilians in Judea and Samaria --a term used by politicians in Israel to refer to the West Bank--. Ignorance is not an excuse to erase their blood," he has emphasized.
His statements come after the occupant of the Élysée denounced during the 81st UN General Assembly that what is happening in the Palestinian enclave constitutes a "spectacle (that) embarrasses us all."
The French president has reiterated his call for Palestine to be recognized as a state, emphasizing that France and other countries made that decision almost a year ago, coinciding with the previous edition of the Assembly.
"What credibility do we have if we continue to act in the face of what is happening in Gaza? There are those who boast of a supposed peace in Palestine (...) but that peace has not reopened humanitarian routes. This spectacle embarrasses us!" he has exclaimed.
"Look at what is happening in the West Bank, where violations occur every day, but in the name of what?" Macron has questioned, provoking applause among the attendees.
