The authorities of North Korea have made it clear this Monday that they do not contemplate starting an effective process of denuclearization on the Korean peninsula, citing the "hostile" attitude of the United States, which they describe as "persistent" and coming from a country that is "increasingly dangerous every day."
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the North Korean nuclear arsenal allows for "guaranteeing containment" in the face of the "serious situation" that the country faces, which, as he pointed out, assumes "more risks" against Washington's policies, despite the attempts at rapprochement promoted by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
"Our weapons are an absolute guarantee to defend our sovereignty and this allows. Having them is the right and responsible option to ensure that there is peace and security in the region," the spokesperson indicated, according to a statement released by the state agency KCNA.
The Foreign Affairs representative emphasized that "this stance cannot be diluted or weakened by the repeated expression of the United States, which continues to bet on that denuclearization," and warned that the "confrontation" between both parties "can be clearly seen."
In the same vein, he accused Washington of openly showing a "hostile, extremely sinister and perverse purpose, to tarnish the image of our country and generate internal instability by talking about supposed abuses against Human Rights."
Criticism of the military exercises of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea
The spokesperson has also lashed out at the decision of U.S. forces to maintain joint military maneuvers with Japan and South Korea, which, in his opinion, "constitute a threat to North Korea and the countries of the region." He added that Washington "also perpetrates acts of aerial espionage and other military provocations."
As he explained, "the Trump administration has fully reaffirmed its unchanging hostile policy of arbitrarily violating the sovereignty, political system, and security interests of the country through the farce of denuclearization, the smear campaign regarding Human Rights, and military threats."
For all this, he has argued that the United States exhibits a "clearer confrontational stance in terms of rhetoric and behavior" and "has become one of the causes of the increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula." In this context, he has warned that "we will be increasingly resolute and clear when exercising the defense of our sovereignty and upholding the supreme interests of the country," in open opposition to the gestures of rapprochement promoted by Trump.
