Russia has made use of its right of veto as a permanent member of the UN Security Council to bring down the resolution proposal presented by the United States regarding the extension of the mandate of the United Nations mission (MINURSO) in Western Sahara.

The Polisario Front, political representative of the self-determination of the Sahrawi people, had flatly rejected the US initiative, understanding that the document fully supported the autonomy plan promoted by Morocco, a project that the Sahrawi movement considers unacceptable because it stifles its historical aspirations.

In this context, Moscow has registered in the last few hours its own draft resolution, in which it eliminates any mention of the Moroccan autonomy plan and instead opts for a "just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the principle of self-determination".

The United States ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, has announced that he will veto the Russian proposal.
