The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has celebrated the victory of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the second round of the presidential elections and has predicted that a similar result for progressive forces will occur in Spain in the elections on November 29.
In a message published on the social network X, reported by Europa Press, Sánchez stated: "Great victory for Lula! What has happened in Brazil will happen in Spain," also emphasizing that "the resurgence of global progressivism has just begun."
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has also congratulated Lula da Silva on a "brilliant and democratic victory," recalling that the Brazilian government is "a strategic partner of Spain," with which a "support" agenda for multilateralism, the role of the United Nations, the defense of democracy, and the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur is shared.
Albares added that "we will continue to work with that strategic partner that is so important for Spain with whom we share that agenda of democracy, foreign policy, defense of multilateralism, and, above all, progress and social justice for our peoples," in statements made in an interview on "RNE."
The head of Foreign Affairs emphasized that, although polls anticipated the victory of the opposition candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, the ballots have shown that elections are "the only poll that matters" because they reflect "what citizens express at the polls." In this context, he expressed his confidence that President Pedro Sánchez can reaffirm the Government in the appointment on November 29.
Torres and Saiz reinforce the message of "resurgence"
In the same line as Sánchez, the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, has predicted a socialist resurgence in the elections on November 29, taking as a reference the result of Lula da Silva in the second round of the Brazilian presidential elections.
"It is going to happen, I am convinced that every day that resurgence is more real. I breathe it, I notice it, I feel it in the streets," Torres pointed out in an interview on "TVE," where he reiterated the political and social project of the PSOE against what he attributes to the PP and Vox, "which cheapens dismissal" or promotes a future "labor counter-reform that leads to poverty."
On the other hand, the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, has described Lula's victory in Brazil as a "magnificent news." In statements to "Cadena Ser," she has predicted that this is "what will happen in Spain on the next November 29, that democracy will prevail over hatred, over disinformation, over denialism."
Foreign Affairs highlights Brazil's democratic example
In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation has conveyed its congratulations to Lula da Silva for his triumph and has wished him success for "the presidential term he is preparing to assume."
The Government has also expressed its recognition to the Brazilian people for "the exemplary development of the electoral process," which, it emphasizes, demonstrates "Brazil's firm commitment to democracy."
Finally, the Executive has reiterated its determination to continue strengthening the strategic partnership between Spain and Brazil, "based on our shared values, both in the bilateral and multilateral and Ibero-American spheres, in order to promote the well-being and prosperity of our peoples."
