The Armed Forces of South Korea carried out warning shots after several North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the eastern sector of the border between the two Koreas, according to a report this Sunday by the South Korean news agency Yonhap.
The episode took place when a small North Korean contingent accessed the area located south of the line that separates the two countries for a few moments. In response, the South Korean Army acted following its operational protocols and fired warning shots, which caused the North Korean military to immediately retreat to their side of the border.
These warning shots are the first carried out by South Korean forces in 2026 following an incursion of North Korean troops across the MDL. Until this incident, there had been no recorded crossings of this type by Northern forces this year.
South Korean military sources consulted by Yonhap consider it possible that the North Korean soldiers were conducting patrol duties when they crossed the dividing line. After the warning detonations, the Northern military would have returned to their usual positions, with no further movements or behaviors considered unusual observed in the area afterward.
According to the current rules of engagement, the forces of Seoul must first issue warnings through radio communications when North Korean forces approach the shared border. If they cross the MDL, the procedure establishes the firing of warning shots.
In recent years, there have been several instances of sporadic crossings of the border line by North Korean military personnel, alongside the reinforcement of defenses and military positions by Pyongyang in the border area.
Tension has increased since North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stated at the end of 2023 that relations between the two Koreas should be understood as those of "two hostile states."
The MDL marks the military border that divides the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), created after the end of the Korean War, a conflict that took place between 1950 and 1953.
