The commander of the Lebanese Army, Rudolph Haykal, stated this Tuesday that the Armed Forces of the country will continue with the tasks related to the agreement reached with Israel, by which the Lebanese Army must take control of several areas in the south where the withdrawal of Israeli troops is planned, despite Beirut denouncing that Israel continues to attack this region.
"The Army will continue to fulfill all tasks related to the framework agreement within the available capacities, while the Israeli occupation forces continue their attacks and violations of the understandings established in the agreement," Haykal has pointed out in statements collected by the Lebanese agency NNA.
The military chief made these statements after meeting with former U.S. ambassador Edward Gabriel, current president of the American Task Force for Lebanon (ATFL), with whom he analyzed the situation in the south of the country.
In recent weeks, the authorities in Beirut have insisted that the repeated Israeli aggressions and their non-compliance with the pact are hindering the effective deployment of the Lebanese Army in the southern areas.
The agreement closed with Israel at the end of June contemplates the progressive withdrawal of Israeli forces from the so-called "pilot zones," where they will transfer control to the regular Lebanese forces, within a broader framework that also includes efforts to proceed with the disarmament of the militia party Hezbollah.
