The Socialist Party candidate for the French presidential elections of 2027, Raphael Glucksmann, said this Monday that he favors modifying the electoral calendar so that the trip to the polls does not coincide with the May 1 mobilizations. According to the current planning, the second round of the elections is set for Sunday, May 2.
"I think it would be a smart decision considering the degree of polarization and the level of animosity that exists," said the MEP and Socialist candidate for next year’s elections in an interview given to the BFMTV channel.
The leader pointed out that the country’s social situation invites "to take the presidential elections out of that context and move them up by a week".
"In today’s society, I believe that, indeed, it would be smart to change the date of the elections," he reiterated, at a time when public debate is growing over the advisability of moving the electoral date, a possibility that, for now, the French Executive rules out.
In this line, the Government spokesperson, Maud Bregeon, has emphasized in recent days that she sees no reason to alter the calendar and has recalled that the security forces have managed to contain the student protests and those of the 'yellow vests' after the incidents recorded in the mobilizations of October 17.
The Government already detailed last July that the presidential elections to choose Emmanuel Macron’s successor will be held in a first round on April 18 and, if necessary, a second round will take place 15 days later, on Sunday, May 2.
