The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on the night of this Wednesday that he will deliver "a dividend of $5,000 (almost €4,300) to every adult citizen of the United States" in case the Republican Party prevails over the Democrat and gains control of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections --the 'midterms'--, scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, in less than two months.
Trump made this proposal during a speech at the Republican convention held in Dallas, in the state of Texas, where he reiterated that, "if the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate of the United States, both (...), I will distribute a dividend of $5,000 to every adult citizen of the United States."
The president justified that his Administration can assume a disbursement of this magnitude by appealing to the "tremendous economic success" that, he claims, his Government has achieved and to the "enormous strength and economic prosperity" of the United States, despite the public debt rising to $40 trillion (€34.4 trillion), which is increasing financing costs.
This "dividend" would not serve to reduce that indebtedness. According to the figures from the 'The American Presidency' project at the University of Santa Barbara, California, in the last elections --the presidential ones of 2024-- there were just under 244.7 million people eligible to vote (244,666,890 people).
If that figure is multiplied by the $5,000 promised, and given that the president has not limited the payment to those who support him at the polls, the potential cost of the plan would exceed $1.2 trillion (€1.05 trillion).
Calls for votes to "defeat communism in the United States"
In his speech, marked by an electoral tone, the occupant of the White House emphasized the "thousands of dollars in the pockets of working families" that, he claims, have been achieved thanks to "the largest tax cuts in the history" of the country, among which he mentioned "the taxes on tips, on overtime, and on Social Security for our wonderful seniors."
He also boasted of having achieved "that interest payments are deductible from their income taxes," something he described as "fantastic" for the automotive sector, of which he claimed "is breaking records." "We are building automotive plants all over the United States," he declared, before emphasizing that they are doing it "everywhere."
In the same speech, the U.S. president committed to "keeping taxes low," achieving "energy independence (...) and even energy dominance," and continuing to support the Armed Forces, the Police, and the rest of the security bodies.
"Above all, and I think this is very important because a sickly and pure madness cloud looms over our country, we must ensure that we defeat communism in the United States," he concluded, calling immediately afterward to go to the polls "for American freedom."
