The New York politician and reference of the progressive wing in the United States, Zohran Mamdani, celebrated this Monday the historic victory of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who this Sunday achieved his fourth term by defeating far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro at the polls.
"As I was returning home, I heard how a group of New Yorkers chanted Lula's name as they left a bar," Mamdani explained. "It seems to me a sign that New Yorkers were happy," he added.
The leader took the opportunity to publicly convey his congratulations to the elected president. "I think it is a sign that the united people will never be defeated," he added, referring to the slogan popularized last century by Colombian politician Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, which later became a universal anthem of protest against dictatorships.
Lula's victory has also been celebrated by another emblematic figure of American progressivism, Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. "Yesterday, Brazil showed the world that the will of the people is stronger than the authoritarians who try to suppress it," she stated on social media.
"Congratulations to President Lula and congratulations to Brazil," she stated.
