The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has demanded explanations this Saturday from the companies responsible for the electrical grid in Lanzarote after the energy zero recorded in the early morning: "If there are responsibilities, we will demand them."

In an official statement, the regional department has made it clear that it wants to find out "what went wrong and why" during the past night, so they "will closely follow" the technical reports that are prepared and will raise the corresponding claims if any type of negligence is confirmed.

From the Ministry, they emphasize that "What happened demonstrates that we need to continue reinforcing the electrical system of the Canary Islands, and that is what we are working on. We declared an energy emergency at the beginning of our term, and we are investing in improving the networks that bring electricity to homes and businesses, and in batteries to store energy, so that the system can withstand better when a problem arises."

The energy zero, which left almost the entire island of Lanzarote and La Graciosa without power, was recorded around 5:45 AM. By 7:13 AM, the service was practically restored. According to the information provided by the authorities, the outage would have originated from an incident in the 66 kV network linked to the Mácher substation, in the municipality of Tías.

The Ministry recalls that in Lanzarote one of the priority actions is the new electrical line between Tías and Playa Blanca, with which it seeks to have "a more solid infrastructure" that will make it possible, in a later phase, to dismantle the current line.
