Ministers, deputies, and other positions from the left have expressed their condolences for the passing of Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old woman whose eviction triggered recent protests for housing in various cities in Spain.

From the socialist sector of the Government, the Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, has "deeply" lamented Maricarmen's death. "My condolences and recognition to those who accompanied her and fought with her until the end," she stated on the social network 'X'.

In a similar vein, the Ministers of Finance, Arcadi España; Digital Transformation, Óscar López; Science, Diana Morant; and Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, have issued messages of support to Maricarmen's family and loved ones. They remembered her as an "tireless symbol of the fight for dignified housing" and a reference of "courage" and "dignity." "Her fight continues," Morant emphasized.

Torres also highlighted to the media in Seville the importance of validating the royal decree-laws on housing approved this Tuesday by the Council of Ministers, considering them tools that can "prevent" similar evictions. He expressed his regret for not having been able to stop Maricarmen's eviction.

The Secretary General of the PSOE, Rebeca Torró, stated that the pain for her passing is "proportional to the enormous example of struggle" she leaves behind and assured that her figure will remain in the collective memory.

Sumar claims her example

From Sumar, they have also valued Maricarmen's trajectory as an emblem of the defense of the right to housing. "A woman who was thrown out of her home and who, instead of giving up, fought for dignity," stated the second vice president and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, on 'Bluesky'.

In similar terms, the Minister of Health, Mónica García, and the Minister of Social Rights, Pablo Bustinduy, have described Maricarmen as an example of dignity for her resistance, which ignited "a fuse that will not go out."

The Minister of Youth, Sira Rego, expressed her "sadness and anger" at the news. "I hope those who forced her to live in fear cannot live peacefully," she wrote on her social networks.

The federal coordinator of IU, Antonio Maíllo, has expressed his solidarity both to Maricarmen's environment and to "everyone who accompanied her in her fight to stay living in what has been her home for more than 50 years." In the same vein, the general secretary of the PCE and deputy of Sumar, Enrique Santiago, has emphasized that "her whole life was in that house and, by taking it away from her, she has lost both."

Podemos attacks vulture funds

Podemos has directly blamed investment funds for Maricarmen's death. "She did not die, she was murdered by the vultures who wanted to take her house, the justice system and the administrations that allowed it," denounced the general secretary of the formation, Ione Belarra, who has demanded that her memory "serve to bring down the housing business in this country once and for all."

The spokesperson for ERC in Congress, Gabriel Rufián, opted for a very brief reaction on 'X': "What sons of bitches."
