The participants in the camp for the right to housing at Puerta del Sol in Madrid have embarked on an improvised march towards the Congress of Deputies to pay tribute to Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old woman whose eviction triggered mobilizations in defense of dignified housing in various places in Spain and who passed away this Wednesday.
The news of Maricarmen's death, who became a reference in the fight for housing, has caused a deep impact among those gathered in the emblematic Madrid square. Immediately, those present began to chant slogans such as "They are not dead, they are murders," "We do not tolerate one more eviction," or "This is class struggle and we cannot make peace."
A spokesperson for the camp, aided by a megaphone, called to keep the mobilization alive. "The best tribute we can pay her is to continue the fight," he pointed out. "We are not going to stop, we are going to continue," he added in front of the attendees.
Subsequently, escorted by agents of the National Police, the protesters began the march towards the Congress of Deputies until they reached Cedaceros street, where they were ordered to stop. Once there, they lit candles and observed a minute of silence in memory of Maricarmen.
