The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, has pointed out that it would be "unthinkable" for there to be "Spaniards with fewer rights than others" in "2027, election year" --autonomous, municipal, and general--, and has called on the Supreme Court to "resolve the situation as soon as possible".
Torres has emphasized that the ruling known this Thursday "affects a large number of Spaniards" and has defended that, in defense of the "general interest", the recognition of the condition of Spaniards "in accordance with the legally established procedures can exercise the rights inherent to such condition" should be guaranteed, as published on 'X' and reported by Europa Press.
The head of Democratic Memory has expressed the Government's support for the dissenting vote formulated by one of the magistrates, understanding that the precautionary measures agreed upon by the High Court "involve a temporary limitation of a fundamental right".
In this line, he has stressed that "no one can presume the voting intention of Spaniards" nor "deny a right as fundamental in democracy as the vote". Torres has insisted that the Government will act "as it should" and "in accordance with the mechanisms established by law to defend a right that all Spaniards have".
On the other hand, the Minister of Justice, Félix Bolaños, has lashed out at PP and Vox for their opposition to the so-called grandchildren's law, accusing them of cutting "sacred" rights such as the right to vote, in this case for the "descendants of those Spanish exiles who are now nationals".
In a video released this Thursday on his social networks, Bolaños criticized the precautionary suspension of the vote for people already registered in the Electoral Census of Absentee Residents (CERA) who obtained nationality through the so-called "grandchildren's law", following the appeals filed by Iustitia Europa and Vox.
The minister has stated that the right and the far-right "cast doubt on democracy" and challenge social laws "because they are extensions of rights".
"Every time the right and the far-right achieve something, they show us their little paw. We already know what they want, to cut rights," Bolaños has stated in the mentioned video. "In this case, the most sacred in democracy, to cut the right of some Spaniards to be able to vote, to be able to choose," he added.
Finally, Bolaños has emphasized that the Executive is going to "defend the equality of all Spaniards": "If you are Spanish, you have the right to vote, as is logical, as the Constitution says."
