The Racing de Santander has managed to come back against Espanyol (2-1) this Saturday, October 24, at the Campos de Sport de El Sardinero, in a match corresponding to the tenth round of LaLiga EA Sports. The Catalan team took the lead in the 62nd minute thanks to a goal from Edu Expósito, but the Cantabrians reacted with goals from Jeanuël Belocian, in the 69th minute, and Yassir Zabiri, in the 84th, which turned the scoreboard around. The result allows the team led by José Alberto López to reach eleven points and temporarily distance themselves from the relegation spots, while Espanyol, managed by Manolo González continues with eight points and worsens its delicate classification situation.

The match pitted two direct rivals for survival against each other, both arriving tied on eight points after nine rounds. Racing sought to take advantage of their strength at home, where they had not yet known defeat this season, while Espanyol needed a victory to break their poor run of results. The equality marked a first half without goals, although with chances for both teams and a controversial refereeing decision that provoked protests from the visiting team.

Edu Expósito puts Espanyol ahead in a second half of maximum tension

After a first half without goals, Espanyol managed to take the lead in the 62nd minute through an action completed by Edu Expósito. The midfielder took advantage of an assist from Javi Hernández to shoot from inside the area and surpass the local goalkeeper, Julen Agirrezabala, placing the score at 0-1. The goal seemed to bring the Catalan team closer to an important victory to distance themselves from the lower part of the standings, but Racing reacted quickly.

Just seven minutes later, Jeanuël Belocian equalized the match in the 69th minute with a powerful left-footed shot from outside the area after receiving a pass from Sergio Canales. The goal restored confidence to the Cantabrian team, which increased offensive pressure in search of the comeback while Espanyol tried to contain the local attacks. Racing's insistence finally found reward in the 84th minute, when Yassir Zabiri scored the 2-1, unleashing celebration in El Sardinero and leaving the visiting team with very little margin to react.

Refereeing controversy over a possible penalty in favor of Espanyol

One of the most discussed moments of the match took place in the 39th minute, when the referee Jesús Gil Manzanowent to the VAR monitor to review a possible handball by Pablo Ramón inside the Racing area. After observing the images, the official decided not to award a penalty, considering that a foul by Roberto Fernández on Belocianhad occurred beforehand, an interpretation that provoked protests from the visiting bench.

The coach of Espanyol, Manolo González, expressed his disagreement with the decision and ended up receiving a yellow card after protesting from the technical area. The controversy continued after the match, when the Catalan club publicly expressed its displeasure with the refereeing through a social media post questioning Gil Manzano's performance.

How the LaLiga standings look after Racing–Espanyol

The comeback allows Racing to reach eleven points in ten matches, with a record of three wins, two draws, and five losses. The Cantabrian team thus improves its position compared to the start of the match, when it was among the teams in the lower zone, and is provisionally placed in the middle part of the standings, pending the results of the rest of the matchday.

The Espanyol, for its part, remains with eight points after suffering another defeat and is provisionally in the relegation zone. The situation has become even more complicated for the Catalans after the victory of Elche against Rayo Vallecano by 0-3, a result that has allowed the Elche team to reach ten points and surpass several direct rivals. With these scores, the fight to avoid the last three positions tightens, while Racing achieves a victory of special importance against a direct opponent.

The upcoming matches for Racing and Espanyol in LaLiga

The schedule will not grant much margin for rest to either of the two teams. The Racing will host Real Madrid on November 1, a particularly demanding match against one of the title contenders, while Espanyol will visit Villarreal on Friday, October 30, with the need to earn points to improve its standings.

The tenth matchday will continue with the matches between Valencia and Villarreal, Atlético de Madrid and Deportivo de La Coruña, as well as the Clásico between Barcelona and Real Madrid, scheduled for this Sunday, October 25. The pending results will finish shaping a classification in which Racing's victory represents an important boost for their survival aspirations.
