The Parliament of Galicia gave the green light this Wednesday to two initiatives from the Popular Parliamentary Group that urge the central Government to substantially reinforce support and protection for the maritime-fishing sector, focusing on the demands of shellfish gatherers and the fishing brotherhoods of the Community.

In both proposals, the 'popular' party demands that the central Executive implement "urgent and effective" measures that go beyond "unfulfilled promises" and ensure the economic sustainability of a sector considered "strategic" for thousands of families settled along the Galician coast.

The deputy Nazareth Cendán was responsible for presenting one of the initiatives, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the rights of women shellfish gatherers, who are mostly women. As she recalled, despite the temporary halt of their activity for reasons beyond their control, they were forced to continue paying their monthly contributions to Social Security in full.

In this context, the PP now proposes that the exemption of 100% of contributions for shellfish gatherers affected by this specific situation be approved.

The second initiative was defended by deputy Dolores Hermelo, who demanded "more effective support" for the 63 fishing brotherhoods existing in Galicia, which account for 28% of the total number of brotherhoods in the State.

At this point, the creation of a specific line of aid is requested to compensate for the impact that these entities have suffered due to the lack of personnel in the Maritime Captaincies and due to the full application of the new regulation on Maritime Navigation Management.
