The next International Tobacco Congress will take place in the province of Cáceres in October 2027, with the participation of delegations from the main European tobacco-producing countries, including Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, Greece, and Spain.
This biennial meeting serves to examine the situation of the sector and its challenges, and will involve the participation of the Diputación de Cáceres, which has already expressed its willingness to collaborate in its development.
This was explained by the president of the provincial institution, Miguel Ángel Morales, after holding a meeting on Wednesday with members of the board of Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de Extremadura and the National Tobacco Federation, in which the possible celebration of this congress in the province of Cáceres was studied. The national president of Cetarsa, Juan Andrés Tovar, was also present at the meeting.
The president of the Tobacco Sector of Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias Extremadura, Juan José Manzanero, has been the one to convey to Morales the proposal for Cáceres to be the venue for the congress. Among the alternatives proposed is the San Francisco Cultural Complex, in the capital of Cáceres, which was already the venue for this event in 2010, although other municipalities in the province, such as Plasencia, are also being considered.
For his part, Miguel Ángel Morales has reiterated the Diputación's willingness to support and facilitate the organization of this international forum, which would also serve to project the image of the province and bring attendees closer to the main tobacco-producing area of Extremadura.
The president of the Cáceres diputación has emphasized that tobacco is a key economic activity for many families and towns in the community, and that "it contributes decisively to the maintenance of activity and employment in the rural environment."
Representatives of the sector have highlighted the positive reception of the initiative and the willingness of the Diputación de Cáceres to work together to make the celebration of the congress a reality.
It is worth remembering that Extremadura concentrates 99% of the cultivation and transformation of tobacco in Spain, which places it as the main producing region in Europe, with a total economic impact of 126 million euros in the community, according to the report "Socioeconomic relevance of the tobacco value chain in Spain," which details that the region exports 74% of its production, close to 70 million euros.
