The Minister of the Sea, Marta Villaverde, has called for "unity of action" between the fishing sector and the various public administrations in order to strengthen Galicia's role in the European debates that will "define" the future of fishing in the EU.

At the closing of the V Technical Fishing Day of Ribeira, promoted by the Santa Eugenia-OPP83 Galician Cooperative Society of the Sea, the Minister of the Sea emphasized that the sea-industry complex is going through a "decisive" phase, conditioned by the negotiation of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034 and by the upcoming review of the Common Fisheries Policy.

Villaverde has stressed the "high" level of agreement existing between the Xunta and the sea professionals, warning that Brussels cannot turn a "deaf ear" to the demands of "the main fishing region in Europe." Among the objectives set, she has advocated for the continuity of a "specific, fair, and sufficient" European fund for fishing and aquaculture, with a minimum allocation of 7.290 billion euros.

Regarding future community regulations, the minister has insisted on the advisability of placing social and economic factors on an equal footing with marine environment protection, so that the three components are considered at the same level within the concept of fishing sustainability.

In the same way, she has highlighted the attention to the main challenges of the fleet, such as the need for accessible financing for the renewal of vessels, the simplification of bureaucratic burdens, the review of capacity and tonnage limits, the streamlining of the transfer of available capacity, and the technical and economic reinforcement of decarbonization processes.
