The National Police has received in recent days up to five complaints about the theft of the outdoor unit of air conditioning devices installed in different properties in the city of Granada. The objective of the thieves would be to get the copper contained in these devices.
According to what the newspaper "Ideal" reported this Wednesday and was later corroborated by the National Police, there have been thefts of air conditioning motors at the headquarters of the neighborhood association of Parque Nueva Granada, at the health center and in a bar in this same area, at the local of the neighborhood platform of Campo Verde (North district) and in a dance school on Joaquina Eguaras avenue.
The aforementioned newspaper explains that at the headquarters of the neighborhood association of Parque Nueva Granada "some devices were ripped out and others were stripped," while at the Campo Verde association "the complete devices were taken."
These events occur just a month after several streets in these neighborhoods were left without electricity supply due to a blackout caused by the theft of wiring, also for its subsequent sale as copper.
The National Police details that the perpetrators break and dismantle the stolen devices to extract the copper coil located inside the motors and sell it afterwards. They add that they also sell the metal casings of these devices in scrap yards.
From the police force, they remind that there had not been any thefts of air conditioning devices in Granada for years and attribute this new wave of crime to the increase in the price of copper in the markets.
