Iberia has confirmed that it will continue to not operate its direct flights between Spain and Cuba during the coming months, maintaining the temporary suspension motivated by the energy crisis that the island is suffering. The airline sets June 2027 as the horizon to resume the route, a date from which it already has ticket sales open, always conditioned on whether the situation allows for normal operations to resume.

In a note sent to the media, the company has detailed that the current context in the Caribbean country has had a "very significant" impact on both passenger demand and the conditions under which the air operation is carried out.

As long as this interruption of direct flights is maintained, Iberia will continue to offer its customers the option to fly to Panama and, from there, connect to Cuba through the code-sharing agreement it has with Copa Airlines. At the same time, Iberia's commercial offices in Havana (Cuba) will remain open to provide service and assistance to affected travelers.

The airline of the IAG group has also decided to expand flexibility measures for those who already have a ticket issued to Cuba, allowing them to choose between a cash refund or a voucher, as well as the possibility of changing the destination to Miami, Panama, Santo Domingo, or Mexico.

"Iberia has a historic commitment to Cuba since 1949, the year it made its first flight to the island, and it maintains its willingness to resume operations when possible," the company has recalled, emphasizing its intention to return to the island as soon as the operational context makes it viable.

Since the beginning of February, the route to Cuba was already conditioned by the country's energy difficulties, which forced the airline to introduce a technical stop in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) to refuel on flights back to Madrid. This situation ultimately led to the announcement last April that the connection would be suspended starting in June.

AIR EUROPA CONTINUES WITH ITS OPERATIONS ON THE ISLAND

In parallel, another Spanish airline, Air Europa, maintains its route to Cuba, with three weekly frequencies. Since mid-June, the company has modified the refueling point on the return trip, which is now done in Punta Cana, instead of Santo Domingo, as it had been doing previously.

According to the latest update communicated by the company, this measure will be extended, in principle, until next September 13, unless there are subsequent changes in its planning.
