The Railway Machinists Union has pointed to the failure of the LZB system in the Madrid-Seville line section as the origin of the trains having to run with the "fallback system" and has warned that working "in degraded mode cannot become a usual way of operating in the face of breakdowns".

From the organization they have stressed that "it is still too early to determine the causes" of the accident on the high-speed line, in which at least 68 people have died, although in a statement released this Wednesday they link what happened with the technical incident that affected "all the trains that were within that section".

"For this reason, work was being done with the fallback system to continue circulation in degraded conditions while work was being done to restore the system", they explained in the note. At the same time, they have censured that this type of incident is being recorded "with greater frequency" and have underlined: "This way of operating cannot be normalized".

The union adds that this is "one of the circumstances" that led them to call the strike for this Thursday "for compliance with the commitments in the structural change of railway safety".

The statement comes after this Wednesday an AVE train from Renfe rammed from behind an Iryo convoy stopped on the track at the height of Los Yébenes (Toledo), in what is already the second railway accident with the most fatalities since the Angrois disaster.
