At least five people have lost their lives and two others are in critical condition after the collapse of a six-story building that operated as a hostel in the Satya Niketan neighborhood, in Delhi (India). Authorities fear that there may still be more people trapped under the rubble.
So far, emergency teams have managed to rescue nine people alive and continue the search for possible survivors among the remains of the building, which functioned as a 75-bed guesthouse located next to the South Campus of the University of Delhi, thus mainly accommodating students.
The building's collapse occurred around 1:30 PM this Sunday and it has been reported that construction work was being carried out in the basement, according to the Police.
A witness who witnessed the incident claims that there were at least fifty students inside when the structure came down, a number higher than usual as it was a Sunday without classes.
The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has expressed his condolences for the victims of an event he described as "disturbing." "There are people working at the site and helping those affected," he noted.
