The candidate of the far-right Liberal Party for the Presidency of Brazil, Flávio Bolsonaro, is shaping up to be directly elected in the first round in the elections held this Sunday, with 51.09% of the votes, according to official data corresponding to 12.45% of the count.
His opponent and outgoing president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, would receive 40.71% of the votes. If this trend is confirmed, the result would imply the direct proclamation of Bolsonaro as president, without the need for a second round.
These figures come from the counting of 62,168 electoral sections, out of a total of 499,248 collected by the Superior Electoral Court, the highest body in charge of overseeing the process.
Citizen participation has been at 78.83%, according to the official data from the latest bulletin, which also reports 1.56% of blank votes and 2.4% of null votes.
