The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, urged this Saturday from Egypt to stop the spread of armed conflicts, ensure the protection of the civilian population, and create the necessary conditions to resume a diplomatic path that allows for progress towards a peaceful solution, in an international scenario marked by the intensification of wars and growing human suffering.

"We need to stop the expansion of war, protect civilians, and create the political space for diplomacy and peace," Guterres pointed out in a message shared on social media to his delegation in the African country. In the same text, the Secretary-General of the UN defended the need to combat the inequalities that divide societies and to end the conflicts that worsen the situation of the most vulnerable populations.

His words come coinciding with the commemoration this Saturday of United Nations Day, which marks the 81st anniversary of the entry into force of the founding Charter of the organization, on October 24, 1945.

Assessment of the role of the UN in its 81 years

On the occasion of this date, the highest official of the UN has highlighted the work carried out by the organization for more than eight decades in areas such as dispute resolution through diplomacy and International Law, the fight against poverty and hunger, the defense of Human Rights, and humanitarian assistance to people affected by wars, disasters, and displacements.

In parallel, Guterres has emphasized the contribution of the United Nations in protecting the planet, promoting gender equality, and advocating for the participation of all states on the international stage.

"Today, the United Nations is more necessary than ever," he asserted while warning that the world faces armed conflicts, the climate crisis, increasing inequalities, and challenges arising from new technologies.

Call to strengthen multilateralism

The Secretary also took advantage of the day to ask member states to renew their commitment to the founding principles of the organization and to International Law, opting for "dialogue instead of division, cooperation instead of confrontation, and solidarity above fear."

"The future of humanity depends on our ability to work together for peace, development, and human rights," concluded Guterres, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the United Nations to respond more effectively to current challenges.
