The Minister of Finance of Israel and leader of the far-right party Religious Zionism, Bezalel Smotrich, demanded this Monday the expulsion of the British ambassador to Israel, David Quarrey, in response to the announced change in diplomatic direction of the British Government regarding the Hebrew State.
"Let's expel the British ambassador tonight! We are not going to be the doormat of an antisemitic government of a country conquered by radical Islam that is trying to save itself from economic and social decay by attacking the Jews and the State of Israel," Smotrich published on social media.
The far-right leader also emphasized that "the British Mandate over the Land of Israel has ended," referring to the period of British colonial rule in Palestine prior to the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.
According to several British media outlets, the Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, is expected to announce this Tuesday before Parliament a "reset" of relations with Israel and a line more aligned with the Palestinian cause, which would include support for the two-state solution, defense of the rights of the Palestinian population, and emphasis on respect for international law.
The plan would also contemplate banning the trade of certain goods and some services coming from Israeli settlements located in the West Bank.
The British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, held talks this Monday with the U.S. President, Donald Trump, and with several leaders from the Persian Gulf, including officials from Qatar, to convey and justify this shift in policy towards Israel.
