At least three inmates have lost their lives and another two people have been injured in two violent episodes that occurred in the penitentiary centers of Trujillo and Arequipa, in Peru, according to what the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) has reported.

The most serious incident has taken place in the prison of Trujillo, where a fight has broken out in pavilion 4. As a result of this confrontation, four inmates have been urgently transferred to the Trujillo Regional Hospital, where finally three of them have died due to the severity of the injuries. The INPE has indicated that the situation inside the prison is already under control and that the inmates involved have been separated from the rest to avoid new incidents.

In parallel, the access guard post of the Penitentiary Establishment of Arequipa has suffered an attack with an explosive device thrown by two individuals. The explosion has caused injuries to a penitentiary officer who was on duty and to a visitor, who have been taken to a medical center to receive health care.

After these events, the Presidency of the INPE has ordered the sending of specialized teams to support the clarification of what happened and has decreed the provisional suspension of visits in Arequipa, in addition to increasing security controls at the entry points. At the same time, the agency has instructed all regional directors in the country to reinforce surveillance in prisons to maintain order and authority, while the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police carry out the investigations into both incidents.
