The British Government announced this Monday that it has given the green light for the dissemination of classified information regarding British-made components of the long-range SCALP missiles. The announcement comes just hours before Prime Minister Andy Burnham travels to Kiev on his first official visit abroad, where he will co-chair his debut at the head of the Coalition of Volunteers, made up of around thirty countries that support Ukraine in its long-term defense against Russian aggression, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the country's independence from the Soviet Union.
"On the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, the Ukrainian people should have no doubt: the United Kingdom stands with you today and will do so as long as necessary," Burnham stated in a statement provided by his office.
In that same note, 10 Downing Street specifies that the British Executive "has authorized the defense company MBDA to disclose classified information about the British components of the long-range SCALP missile, while Ukraine and France seek to establish local assembly lines in Ukraine."
The document emphasizes that the missile "is the French version of the British Storm Shadow, and both use shared French and British technology."
"I am proud of the contribution our country has made to Ukraine and I want the Ukrainian people to hear directly from me that our support will not waver. After all, Ukraine's security is our security," Burnham defended, warning Russia that "it should not doubt our determination."
The decision is part of his first international trip, in which the Labour Prime Minister will lead, along with his partners, the meeting of the Coalition of Volunteers to analyze how the United Kingdom can continue to strengthen Ukraine's defense. Additionally, Burnham will participate in the celebrations of Ukraine's Independence Day.
