The PSIB candidate for Congress for the Balearic Islands for the general elections on the upcoming November 29, Francina Armengol, has called for the "active mobilization of women" and has criticized the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, for defining himself as a feminist "because he was born among women."
The also president of Congress has confronted those words with the intention of the popular leader to eliminate the Ministry of Equality. "It seems that he is mocking us. Feminism is defended by acting, and the action of the PP has been to surrender to the far right that denies gender-based violence and equality," she stated.
In an interview on Cadena SER, Feijóo was questioned about whether he considers himself a feminist and responded by referring to "having grown up in a house with many more women than men." "How am I supposed to think that a woman does not have the same rights as a man?" he pointed out during the conversation.
Armengol made these statements at the Antoni Alemany Cladera Autumn School, held this Saturday morning in s'Arenal de Llucmajor and organized by the Socialist Federation of Mallorca (FSM).
According to the PSIB in a statement, the socialist leader has positioned feminism and the defense of already conquered rights as one of the "major axes of electoral confrontation" in the face of the "real threat of a huge regression caused by the agreements of the PP with Vox."
In this context of "rightward shift of the political landscape," the general secretary of the Balearic socialists has called for "an active mobilization during this electoral campaign to achieve a great victory on November 29." In her opinion, only the socialist vote can ensure that women "can continue deciding about their own bodies" against "the threats looming over abortion and euthanasia."
The candidate has contrasted this "risk of regression" with the "real transformation" that, in her opinion, has been achieved during the eight years of Pedro Sánchez's presidency and the two legislatures in which she herself was at the head of the Govern.
In this regard, she has cited, among other advances, the specific protection for hotel chambermaids. "All that push for equality conditions in the world of work has been completely forgotten with the PP governments in the Balearic Islands and Mallorca," she lamented.
