The Secretary General of Podemos, Ione Belarra, has gone to the Aranjuez prison to visit the pro-Palestinian activist James 'Fergie' Chambers, imprisoned since July 10 and whose extradition is requested by the United States for an alleged crime of money laundering and possible financing of the terrorist organization Hamas.
As detailed by the purple formation, Belarra has traveled to the penitentiary center where Chambers is held, after the National Court rejected the request for release from the American millionaire philanthropist, noting that his high economic capacity implies a flight risk.
From Podemos, they have criticized that the Government continues the processing of the delivery to the United States, while Belarra has conveyed that the activist is in good spirits and maintains "his strong political commitment" intact in defense of the rights of the Palestinian people.
"He is very clear that he has done nothing wrong and that he is only being pursued for his solidarity with Palestine," added the leader of Podemos, who again demands from the Executive the "immediate release of Chambers, because denouncing a genocide cannot be a crime."
In addition, she emphasized that "Chambers is the first political prisoner in Spain for the Palestinian cause and every minute he spends in prison is a minute in which the Government demonstrates that it has no real commitment to Palestine."
Belarra has described as "incomprehensible" that the Executive keeps the activist behind bars "due to the demands of Donald Trump" and has asked both the National Court and the Government, which will have the final decision on the extradition, to archive the case against Chambers and reject his delivery to the United States. "He must be released immediately," she insisted.
