Four people, two adults and two minors, have been arrested for public disorder and assault against authority, while four agents of the National Police have been injured —three with minor injuries and one still pending medical evaluation— during the altercations recorded at the end of the demonstration called by the citizen initiative 'Por Ceuta' in front of the Congress of Deputies, according to the Government Delegation in Madrid.
The disturbances were triggered at the conclusion of the gathering, in which several hundred Ceutí residents in Madrid gathered this Wednesday in front of the Lower House to demand "immediate solutions" and hold the Executive accountable regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta, which originated after the entry of thousands of immigrants at the end of July into the autonomous city.
The event —organized coinciding with the celebration of the Day of the Autonomous City of Ceuta and under the slogan "Ceuta unites us"— brought together numerous Ceutí people from different generations living in the capital, also supported by thousands of citizens from other parts of Spain who wanted to join the mobilization. Once the protest concluded, the agents proceeded to disperse those gathered in front of the Congress door using rubber bullets.
Although the gathering developed peacefully in its early hours, around 9:20 PM the tension began to rise among the attendees, who started to shout slogans and chants against the police forces. With the shout of "with the Moors, there are no balls" hundreds of protesters began to directly confront the agents deployed in the security operation.
The situation worsened and a group of participants began to throw various objects at the police line. In response, the agents acted to disperse the crowd using tear gas and rubber bullet shots, with the aim of restoring order in the vicinity of the Congress.
