The volume of passengers coming from Italy who have been identified in the controls implemented by the Government at Spanish airports, after the suspension of Schengen by this country due to the migratory crisis that occurred in Ceuta on July 30, exceeds 6,000 people, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of the Interior.

As of 1:00 PM on this Wednesday, August 19, the number of travelers who have been asked for documentation upon their arrival in Spanish territory amounted to 6,148. During this period, 565 flights have been inspected and 911 agents have intervened in the operation.

Since Monday, 612 passengers have passed through this control, of which the majority (293) landed on seven planes at Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas Airport. At El Prat Airport (Barcelona), the identification of another 190 nationals from third countries arriving on nine flights has been carried out.

A similar situation has occurred at Bilbao airport, where nine people traveling on eight different flights have been identified; at Sevilla, where controls have been applied to 12 passengers from two planes; and at Málaga, with 13 people controlled from three flights.

At Alicante airport, 21 nationals from third countries arriving on four flights have been subjected to controls, while in Valencia, the same has been done with 24 passengers from five different flights.

In the airports of the Balearic Islands, the one that has concentrated the highest number of identifications has been Ibiza, with eight passengers distributed across nine flights. In Mallorca, five passengers from two flights have been affected, while in Menorca, no travelers from third countries were registered on the only controlled flight.

In the Canary Islands, the distribution is as follows: 31 identifications at Tenerife Sur airport corresponding to six flights; three at Lanzarote airport from three flights; and two people in Fuerteventura from a single flight. In Gran Canaria, one person arriving on a flight to the island was identified, and in Fuerteventura, two passengers from the same plane were identified.

The temporary re-establishment of border controls at airports and ports with direct connections between Spain and Italy has been applied since Saturday, August 8, and it is expected that this measure will be extended until September 7.
