The European Commission, the Council of the EU and the European Parliament will keep their flags at half-mast from this Wednesday and until next weekend as a gesture of support for Spain after the Urda (Toledo) rail accident, in which at least 68 people have died.
Sources from the community executive have told Europa Press that the European flags placed in front of its headquarters will continue flying at half-mast until 00.00 hours on November 1 as a show of "European solidarity" after the collision of the two high-speed trains.
As for the Council of the EU, sources from the institution have explained that the decision will be extended until 8.00 hours on Sunday, a measure agreed with the Spanish delegation and coordinated with the rest of the community bodies.
In the European Parliament, the flags of the EU and Spain will likewise remain at half-mast until midnight on October 31 at its three work headquarters, located in Brussels, Strasbourg (France) and Luxembourg, as well as in its liaison office in Madrid and in the regional delegation in Barcelona, according to parliamentary sources.
The institutional gesture comes after an AVE from Renfe and a train from Iryo crashed at 8.54 hours this Wednesday at the Urda station, in the province of Toledo, an accident with dozens of victims that has led the Government of Castilla-La Mancha to activate the Territorial Emergency Plan (Platecam).
