A fire declared shortly before 3:30 PM this Tuesday in the mountainous area of Quiroga (Lugo) has already burned more than 20 hectares, according to the first estimates provided by the Consellería de Medio Rural to Europa Press.
From the regional department, they indicate that the firefighting teams continue to be deployed on the ground and emphasize that the constant changes in wind direction are complicating efforts to stop the advance of the flames.
The fire originated in the parish of Pacios da Serra, in an area of low mountain with large pine forest surfaces. The councilor for Rural Affairs of Quiroga, Luis Manuel Arias, has also explained to Europa Press that the wind has become a key element that is hindering the control of the fire.
"The fire started up in the mountain, on a summit, and there were moments when it seemed to be shrinking and that it was going to be put out, but in the end it didn't," he pointed out, also indicating that, although the front of the fire has descended down the slope, "for now there are no population centers at risk."
The Consellería has specified that the resources continue to work uninterruptedly and that coordination with the mayor of Quiroga, José Luis Rivera, is maintained to monitor the evolution of the incident.
To combat the flames throughout the day, three technicians, 12 agents, 16 brigades, 15 water pumps, four shovels, two technical support units, seven helicopters, and nine planes have been deployed, forming a large firefighting device.
