The Attorney General of the State has updated the number of sexual assaults counted in the context of the migratory crisis caused by the massive entry of immigrants in Ceuta at the end of July to 23.
Sources from the Public Ministry have indicated to Europa Press this Monday that nine of the victims are minors, aged between 14 and 17 years; that five of the assaults were rapes -- assaults with penetration -- and that eight alleged perpetrators have been identified: four of Moroccan nationality, three Spaniards, and one Belgian.
This new figure is known after the Attorney General of the State, Teresa Peramato, detailed last Thursday, during an official visit to Ceuta, that up to that moment 16 sexual assaults with 17 victims had been recorded, most of them minors.
"What the chief prosecutor has told us is that there has truly been an increase in some categories of crimes. In the last report we received, 16 sexual assaults with 17 victims had been recorded, 16 of them women, most of them minors," she indicated in statements to journalists from the autonomous city.
During her trip to Ceuta, Peramato held meetings with the president of the autonomous city, Juan Jesús Vivas; the Government delegate, Miguel Ángel Pérez, and the team of prosecutors in the area, in addition to visiting a center for minors.
According to the head of the Prosecutor's Office, the cases of sexual assaults detected highlight the "special vulnerability" of migrant minors in the context of this migratory crisis.
CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY ALSO INCREASE
In addition, she detailed that there has been "an increase in crimes against property," mainly thefts, as well as "crimes of assault and resistance against law enforcement agents."
Peramato emphasized that the situation the city is experiencing is "traumatic," and expressed her solidarity with both the Ceuta population and the migrant people who crossed from Morocco.
The Attorney General also wanted to highlight the work of the Ceuta Prosecutor's Office: "We are working together with the Area Prosecutor's Office to act jointly, but they have to take into account that the functions of the Prosecutor's Office are very limited. The functions are limited to the protection of minors and the monitoring of the measures that institutions may adopt that could affect minors."
