The naval operation of the European Union EUNAVFOR MED IRINI intercepted this Sunday in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea the tanker 'MV Sun', which is being investigated for operating under a false flag as part of the ghost fleet that Russia uses to evade European sanctions on the marketing of Russian crude imposed after the invasion of Ukraine.
The announcement was made on social media by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, who emphasized that the illegal sale of oil carried out by the ships of this ghost fleet represents "a fundamental lifeline" for Russia's war effort against Ukraine.
"The tanker 'MV SUN', suspected of sailing under a false flag in violation of international maritime law, was boarded on August 30 in the Mediterranean by forces of the EUNAVFOR MED IRINI operation for flag verification," the head of European diplomacy pointed out.
Kallas specified that this is already the sixth vessel suspected of belonging to the Russian ghost fleet that has been boarded by EU missions in recent months, and emphasized that the European Union "will continue to cut off" these supply routes.
Additionally, she announced that measures against the Russian ghost fleet will be among the topics that the Defense ministers of the European Union will discuss in the informal meeting they will hold this Tuesday in Ireland.
