The wildfire map of this Thursday, August 27, shows a situation of greater stability in the main hotspots recorded during the last few days. The fire declared in Collserola, in Barcelona, was controlled during the night of Wednesday, while the one in Segorbe, in the Sierra Calderona, has also left behind the emergency phase.
The main novelty in the map is the fire declared on Wednesday in Pina de Montalgrao, in Castellón. The rapid action of the firefighting teams allowed it to be stabilized shortly after its start, so the general situation is once again marked by monitoring and work on perimeters that no longer present free propagation.
Official map of active fires from Copernicus
The European Forest Fire Information System, EFFIS, offers a public viewer to locate fires, heat points, and burned areas in Spain and the rest of Europe.
The map allows observing the perimeters detected by satellite, but the appearance of a heat point does not necessarily mean that there is an active wildfire. To know the official status of each emergency, the regional services of 112 and firefighting must also be consulted.
Collserola is controlled after affecting 54 hectares
The fire declared on Tuesday in the vicinity of the Collserola Natural Park, in Barcelona, was controlled at 8:00 PM on Wednesday. The affected area remains at 54 hectares, after an emergency that initially forced the confinement of nearby neighborhoods and the evacuation of several homes.
The firefighters are maintaining monitoring and finishing work on the perimeter, and the City Council has kept the alert device activated until definitive extinction can be declared. The investigation into the origin of the fire remains open.
Segorbe remains under surveillance after being controlled
The fire in Segorbe, caused by a lightning strike and spread towards the municipality of Gátova, remains controlled after affecting 633 hectares in the vicinity of the Sierra Calderona.
The fire was declared controlled on Tuesday, six days after its start. The teams continue working on the affected area and the perimeter to prevent possible re-ignitions before it can be declared extinguished.
Pina de Montalgrao stabilizes the new hotspot in Castellón
The forest fire declared during the afternoon of Wednesday in Pina de Montalgrao, in the Castellonese region of Alto Palancia, was stabilized approximately an hour and a half after its detection.
The fire mobilized four units of forest firefighters, one of them airlifted, in addition to a team from the Provincial Consortium, a forest coordinator, and four aerial resources. After stabilization, the aerial resources withdrew and the ground teams continued working in the affected area.
Pinofranqueado remains controlled in Las Hurdes
The fire in Pinofranqueado, in Cáceres, remains controlled after the emergency recorded last week in the Las Hurdes region. The fire affected thousands of hectares and forced the evacuation of different population centers before the favorable evolution allowed for the lifting of restrictions.
The operation continues to monitor the perimeter and areas that still require surveillance. The situation has moved past the emergency phase and the work is now focused on preventing possible re-ignitions.
Riglos maintains monitoring after the large fire in August
The fire in Las Peñas de Riglos, in Huesca, remains under surveillance after being one of the largest fires recorded during August. The improvement in the situation allowed for the lifting of evacuations and the gradual reduction of the deployment made during the most complicated moments.
The current work focuses on monitoring the points that still require action and on the definitive consolidation of the affected areas before the fire can be declared completely extinguished.
To know the specific situation of a municipality, these sources should be used:
- EFFIS-Copernicus: satellite location, perimeters, and hot spots.
- Civil Protection: emergencies and state deployment.
- DGT: closed or affected roads.
- AEMET: daily fire risk level.
- Autonomous services of 112: official status of each fire, evacuations, and confinements.
Searcher: check the fire risk today in your municipality
Enter the name of your municipality in the searcher to know the level of forest fire risk forecasted today according to AEMET. The searcher is updated daily and shows the situation in more than 8,000 Spanish municipalities through the Forest Fire Danger Index (IPIF).
↔ Slide the table sideways to check all days.
The system classifies the risk into six levels:
- Very low.
- Low.
- Moderate.
- High.
- Very high.
- Extreme.
Each municipality appears classified according to the predominant level expected for that day.
How the fire risk map works
The search engine uses the information published daily by the State Meteorological Agency through its *Forest Fire Danger Index (IPIF).
This system combines different meteorological variables that directly influence the possibility of a forest fire starting and spreading, among them:
- Temperature.
- Relative humidity.
- Wind speed and direction.
- Accumulated precipitation.
- State of vegetation.
With all that data, AEMET prepares a forecast map that allows estimating the level of danger existing at each point of the national territory.
What each risk level means
The index used by AEMET divides the fire risk into six categories:
- Very low* and low indicate that the weather conditions are not very favorable for the start of a large fire.
- The moderate level advises taking extreme caution, especially in activities that may generate sparks or flames.
- When the risk becomes high, very high, or extreme, the possibilities of a fire starting and spreading rapidly increase considerably, especially if episodes of intense wind or very high temperatures coincide.
