MÉS per Mallorca has proposed the elimination of 130,000 tourist places, the restriction of rental cars, and new rules against real estate speculation after the second major protest against summer overcrowding, held last Saturday in Sóller.
In a public statement, the ecosoberanists have urged to implement a comprehensive package of tourist degrowth measures in order to "reverse the social and environmental collapse" that, in their opinion, the archipelago suffers.
The councilor of MÉS per Sóller, Elvira Arbona, has celebrated that "thousands of people, especially young people, took to the streets to say enough and demand brave policies that enable having decent housing and a future in the town."
Arbona has emphasized that it is essential to act in a coordinated manner from all levels of administration. "From the municipalities, we must promote all the tools at our disposal, but it is essential that the Govern and the Government take on their responsibility and deploy structural reforms immediately," she said.
The general coordinator of MÉS per Mallorca, Lluís Apesteguia, has demanded to recover without delay the tourist degrowth policies that, as he recalled, were already promoted when the party participated in the Govern and in the Consell de Mallorca.
As a central goal, he has advocated for the elimination of 130,000 tourist places in the medium term, especially the 100,000 "granted with exceptions by laws of the PP." He has also requested to restore the 2x1 rule in private exchanges and to resume the public purchase and amortization of obsolete tourist places.
In the area of mobility and taxation, the ecosoberanist leader has demanded the co-management of the airport, the limitation of vehicle entry in Mallorca, and the creation of a specific fee for 'rent a car' services.
Likewise, he has proposed to increase the sustainable tourism tax (ITS) and the water canon applied to large consumers, considering that these measures would generate direct resources to finance economic diversification and support degrowth actions.
To address the housing emergency, Apesteguia has requested to declare the Balearic Islands a tense area in order to cap rental prices, as well as to set limits on the purchase of housing by non-residents and companies.
"It is necessary to eliminate from a meadow the speculation of the housing equation. Either we apply sanity and rigor to reduce human pressure or the model will continue to engulf the well-being of our people," concluded the leader of the ecosoberanists.
