The accumulated precipitation during Thursday left 30.9 liters per square meter at the airport of Santander, according to the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency.
The Cantabrian observatory was among the eleven stations of the AEMET network that exceeded ten liters per square meter in 24 hours. The rain particularly affected the northern peninsula, Castilla y León, the Ebro valley, the Pyrenees, the eastern half, and the surroundings of the Gulf of Cádiz.
The record at the airport reflects the intensity of the precipitation that crossed various points of Cantabria during the day. The equivalence used in meteorology is direct: one liter per square meter corresponds to one millimeter of accumulated precipitation.
Aínsa topped the rainfall records in Spain
The highest accumulation of the day was located in Aínsa, in the province of Huesca, where the AEMET station recorded 59.8 liters per square meter.
Most of that amount fell in a very short interval. The Huesca observatory recorded 53.6 liters in one hour and a maximum intensity of 24 liters in ten minutes, data associated with particularly intense precipitation.
Also noteworthy were the accumulations recorded in the Valencian Community. Polinyà de Xúquer reached 53 liters per square meter, Xàtiva reached 50.6, and Carcaixent recorded 41.4 liters.
General decrease in maximum temperatures
The arrival of precipitation and less warm air masses caused a widespread decrease in maximum temperatures in much of Spain. Despite this, five stations of the AEMET network still exceeded 40 degrees.
The highest temperature was recorded in Pollença, in Mallorca, with 41.5 degrees. Also exceeding that barrier were Artà, with 40.9 degrees; Colònia de Sant Pere, with 40.6; Miramar, in Valencia, with 40.4; and the port of Pollença, with 40.1 degrees.
Four stations also maintained minimum temperatures above 25 degrees. The highest nighttime value occurred in La Mola, in Menorca, where the thermometers did not drop below 28.4 degrees.
Wind gusts exceeding 120 kilometers per hour
The convective systems accompanying the storms also left very strong wind gusts. The most intense was measured at the Menorca airport, with 120.6 kilometers per hour.
The Sierra Nevada radiotelescope recorded a gust of 109.4 kilometers per hour, while in Carcaixent, 103.7 was reached. AEMET attributed these values to the storm phenomena developed during the day.
