The Government will commemorate the Diada of September 11 through its delegations abroad spread across 20 countries, with a program that will revolve mainly around the figure and music of Pau Casals, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of his birth.
In a statement released this Wednesday, the Department of European Union and Foreign Action has detailed that the purpose of these activities is "to spread and share Catalan culture around the world, strengthen institutional ties" and accompany the Catalan communities abroad during this significant date.
Along with the tribute to Pau Casals, the Diada will coincide with other relevant anniversaries, such as the 150th anniversary of the birth of the politician and former president of the Generalitat in exile, Josep Irla, and the centenary of the death of the architect Antoni Gaudí.
The work of Casals will be the common thread of the contemporary dance piece by Ariadna Gironès that will take place at the Brussels delegation, as well as the recital by cellist Amy Goto and the photographic exhibition dedicated to the musician that can be visited at the delegation in Washington DC.
Concert in Stockholm and international musical programming
At the Nordic and Baltic Countries delegation, a tribute concert to Casals is planned in Stockholm, led by cellist Josep Castanyer at the Konserthuset, home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of the Swedish capital and the venue for the Nobel Prize ceremony.
Likewise, the delegations of South Korea and Japan will host concerts featuring cellists Taeguk Mun and Yo Kitamura, respectively, while the offices in London, Berlin, Rome, l'Alguer, Lisbon, Geneva, São Paulo, and Bogotá will also schedule musical performances dedicated to Casals.
In the delegations of Sant Julià de Lòria, Mexico City, and Dakar, the focus will be on the figure of Gaudí, and in Paris, the commemorative axis will be the former president Irla. The conseller of Justice and Democratic Quality, Ramon Espadaler, will attend this event in the French capital, and the program will include lectures by historians Laia Arañó and Jordi Gaitx.
Additionally, activities are planned in the delegations of Vienna, Zagreb, Rabat, and Buenos Aires. In the latter, a video mapping will be projected on the facade of the Casal de Catalunya in Buenos Aires, dedicated to both the Year of Pau Casals and the Year of Gaudí.
