The general secretary of Junts, Jordi Turull, has urged to confront the far right to "save the Catalan nation" and has insisted that this fight cannot be done from party tactics, because in his opinion it would only mean a simple palliative care.

"Although some would want it that way, the battle against the far right is not an ideological battle to achieve supremacy, an electoral hegemony," he emphasized this Wednesday during a conference within the framework of the Universitat Catalana d'Estiu, held in Prada de Conflent (France).

The number two of Junts has defended that the far right must be faced "with values" such as freedom, democracy, tolerance, fraternity, social cohesion, personal effort, and progress, which he has been mentioning one by one.

In statements after his speech, Turull has lashed out at the leaders who, according to him, try to divert Junts' attention to focus "towards a certain political formation," referring to Aliança Catalana (AC). He has emphasized that his party is focused on configuring itself as an alternative to the Govern of Salvador Illa and has accused ERC of acting as a crutch for the Catalan Executive.

The challenge of immigration

When addressing the migratory phenomenon, he has appealed to the principles of political Catalanism and has stressed that this project has never been built "despite many difficulties, by pointing fingers at people, by dividing people, by rejecting groups."

The leader of Junts has reiterated that, in his view, the adversary of independence is not found within Catalonia, but "is the Spanish State."

"Now, within Catalunya we have a lot of work to ensure that there is no tension, because Catalunya can take on the immigration that it can take on," Turull has pointed out, warning that it is not acceptable for the population to increase without the resources allocated to public services and the needs arising from that increase growing in parallel.

He has insisted that Catalonia has its own instruments in migration matters and has confirmed that Junts will again register in Congress the bill to delegate immigration powers to the Generalitat, although he has not specified the planned schedule for this new attempt.

It has not specified when the leader of Junts and former president of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, could return to Catalonia, and has added that the issue is not the date of return, but "how much the Spanish State will allow there to be judges who are committing malfeasance and have rebelled against the legislative power," referring to the non-application of the Amnesty Law.

Sterile debate on independentist unity

The leader of Junts has claimed "the unity of independence without uniformity" and has lamented that, in recent years, the movement has become trapped in an internal debate about unity that he considers "sterile."

"The necessary unity, the unity of purpose, the strategic unity in decisive moments, has been confused with an impossible and undesirable uniformity," Turull has stated, defending that internal diversity should be seen as a strength and not as a weakness, although he has warned that this plurality needs to be managed with maturity.
