Orange and Libelium have launched the technological infrastructure of NEXMO, the mobility data space promoted by Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) within the MovEDIHub project, as communicated by the institution.
The initiative, backed by funds from the European Union - Next Generation EU through the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence (Sedia), aims to transform mobility management by creating a secure environment for data exchange between public and private entities, in order to promote new services based on mobility information and advance towards more efficient, intelligent, and sustainable cities.
Until now, a large part of the data related to mobility was fragmented across different organizations and systems, making its joint use difficult.
In this scenario, NEXMO makes possible the integration and exchange of that information in a secure, neutral, and trust-based environment, managed by UC3M, so that each organization retains control over the data it decides to share at all times.
Interested entities can join this ecosystem to integrate into working groups, promote new use cases, and explore innovation opportunities aimed at improving mobility, reinforcing sustainability, and enhancing the quality of life of the population.
Reference in Southern Europe and use cases
NEXMO seeks to establish itself as one of the reference mobility data spaces in Southern Europe, facilitating a secure and reliable information exchange in key areas such as infrastructure management, logistics, and urban mobility.
Its main mission is to strengthen collaboration between public administrations, companies, and other actors in the ecosystem to accelerate the creation of innovative data-driven solutions.
The already operational infrastructure allows for the development of practical applications in different areas. In sustainable urban logistics, the system enables the optimization of last-mile delivery routes thanks to the analysis and prediction of the occupancy of loading and unloading areas, reducing waiting times and unnecessary trips, and thereby the fuel consumption and emissions of urban transport.
Moreover, the combination of data on accidents, cyclist flows, and other mobility indicators makes it feasible to create risk maps aimed at designing safer cities, facilitating the planning of routes for cyclists, pedestrians, and people with reduced mobility.
The platform also allows connecting various sources of information to improve the planning and management of transport infrastructures, while contributing to analyzing daily commutes to work with the aim of designing more sustainable mobility solutions and measuring their impact objectively.
Data governance and access for SMEs
On the technical level, the solution deployed by Orange and Libelium integrates Eclipse EDC connectors, a technology that enables companies to maintain control over their data at all times.
Thus, each organization defines what information it shares, with whom it shares it, and for what purpose, retaining the ability to revoke access when deemed appropriate, in line with the European Union's approach to ensuring secure and reliable data exchange.
Another of the axes of NEXMO is the democratization of access to mobility data, so that small and medium-sized enterprises can join data ecosystems that were traditionally reserved for large corporations.
Thanks to this infrastructure, tech SMEs, mobility companies, and logistics operators will be able to access high-value information to develop new services, drive innovation, and compete on equal terms in the digital environment.
