The Attorney General's Office of the Mexican Republic (FGR) reported this Thursday the arrival in Mexico, coming from Argentina, of the Mexican Navy rear admiral Fernando Farías Laguna, wanted for his alleged participation in "a complex criminal network dedicated to smuggling, dispersal, and distribution of fuel," for which he had been arrested by Argentine authorities at the end of April.
"The Attorney General's Office informs the people of Mexico about the follow-up to the expulsion procedure from Argentina of Fernando 'N', a former public servant possibly related to a complex criminal network dedicated to smuggling, dispersal, and distribution of fuel from which 15 more people have already been detained," the institution stated in a press release in which, according to Mexican regulations, the surnames of the detainee are omitted.
In the development of this operation, "ministerial personnel from the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO) traveled to that country to bring Fernando 'N' with the aim of presenting him before the judicial authority that has requested him in Mexico," the Attorney General's Office specified, detailing that for the transfer of Farías to Mexico City, a plane provided by the Navy was used, with the participation also of members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"The Attorney General's Office thanks the collaboration of authorities from the United States of America, as well as the Foreign Ministry and justice authorities of the Argentine Republic," adds the official statement.
Fernando Farías Laguna had been in custody in Argentina since April 23, indicated for an alleged leadership role within a network dedicated to the smuggling of hydrocarbons, for which there was a red notice from Interpol against him.
At that time, the Mexican Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, publicly referred to him as Fernando 'N', describing him as "the leader of an organization dedicated to the smuggling of hydrocarbons," while the Argentine Minister of Security, Alejandra Monteoliva, made his identity public by stating: "We caught Fernando Farías Laguna," in a message on social media in which she explained that the suspect "entered the country with a false passport." "He is detained and will be extradited," she anticipated then.
The announcement of his shipment to Mexico takes place just one day after the meeting in Buenos Aires between Monteoliva and Harfuch, a meeting in which the Argentine official claimed to have discussed "how to continue strengthening the joint work between Argentina and Mexico to confront drug trafficking and organized crime."
