At least 46 people have lost their lives and another 16 are still missing in the Goronyo area, in northwestern Nigeria, after a boat with 77 occupants capsized. Of the total passengers, 15 have managed to be rescued alive.

"So far, 46 bodies have been recovered and 15 people were rescued alive," reported the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, in statements collected by the Nigerian newspaper "Punch."

According to the police representative, "the rescue team, made up of local divers, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Police, continues the search for the remaining 16 people."

Rufai has also indicated that "77 people were on board the vessel at the time of the incident," and has not provided details about the causes of the accident, which are currently unknown while rescue efforts continue in the area.
