At least twelve crew members, eleven of them of Indian nationality, have been injured this Tuesday in an attack still unexplained against a tanker that was sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to authorities in India.
The Indian government has identified the struck vessel as the tanker "On Peace," flying the Panamanian flag and with a total crew of 19 sailors, of which 17 are citizens of India.
According to the statement released by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the injured have been evacuated and transferred to a hospital in the Omani city of Jasab to receive medical attention, with no further details provided at the moment regarding the severity of the injuries.
In the same note, the Government of India condemns "the constant attacks" against navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked for months by Iran and the United States in the context of the war that both countries have been waging since February of this year.
"We reiterate our call for the immediate cessation of such attacks in the interest of peace and stability in the region," emphasizes the Ministry, which also urges the reopening, "as soon as possible," of "navigation and trade through international waterways."
The Government of Oman confirmed shortly after the evacuation of the injured sailors, an operation that was carried out by the Omani Air Force about nine nautical miles (16 kilometers) northeast of Dschazirat Lima, an island belonging to the Musandam governorate, near where the attack is said to have occurred.
