The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has reacted this Tuesday to the announcement by the United Kingdom, Canada, and France to prohibit trade with Israeli settlements in occupied territory of the West Bank, calling it a step "in the right direction," although "insufficient."
The Palestinian movement has referred to the announcement made on Monday by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, particularly highlighting "his use of the term 'ethnic cleansing' to describe the crimes committed by Israeli settlers" in the West Bank.
According to its spokesperson, Basem Naim, in statements collected by the newspaper 'Filastin', linked to Hamas, both decisions "are important steps in the right direction, but insufficient."
"What is needed to achieve stability and peace in Palestine and beyond is the immediate implementation of relevant international resolutions and the prosecution of war criminals from 'Israel', similar to the Nazi tribunals in Nuremberg, Germany," Naim added.
The head of British diplomacy also indicated that the United Kingdom will impose sanctions on another group of extremist settlers responsible for episodes of violence against Palestinian communities, in addition to expanding the scope of current measures for human rights violations to act more quickly and curb the expansion of settlements.
The government of Andy Burham has coordinated these decisions with France and Canada, which plan to adopt similar initiatives to ban the entry of products from settlements considered illegal. London has emphasized that, with this decision, it aligns itself with the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, and Norway, countries that have already approved or initiated the process to block trade with the occupied territories.
