The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced this Friday the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the South African jurist Navanethem Pillay, better known as Navi Pillay, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and former judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Pillay, born in South Africa in 1941, takes over from the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, distinguished in 2024 for her "tireless effort" in the defense of rights and freedoms in Venezuela and for promoting a "just and peaceful" transition from "dictatorship to democracy".
The Norwegian Institute has received more than 280 proposals for the Nobel Peace Prize this year --208 corresponding to individuals and another 79 to organizations-- a list that remains secret, as the names of the candidates are only made public 50 years after the award is given.
